Overview

Alfred L. Buchanan, a principal of Michaels & May, P.C., began the practice of law in 1990, following a career in law enforcement. Before Michaels & May, P.C., Mr. Buchanan was a shareholder with Fedota Childers & May, P.C. (1999-2004), and an associate with Lord Bissell & Brook (1992-1999) and Phelan, Pope, & John, Ltd. (1990-1992).

Insurance Coverage Litigation

Mr. Buchanan has devoted most of his legal career toward representing insurers and reinsurers, both domestic and foreign, in complex litigation and arbitration proceedings. Representative matters include coverage disputes involving environmental, asbestos, product liability and construction defect claims in a wide array of industries, including oil, petrochemical, electrical, aerospace, automotive, primary metals, paper, and medical device industries.

Other Complex Litigation

Mr. Buchanan also has defended clients in securities fraud and lender liability class actions, shareholder disputes, contract disputes, product liability and personal injury/wrongful death suits, and civil rights actions.

Insurance Counseling

Mr. Buchanan has counseled insurers and reinsurers regarding coverage determinations, claim valuation and forecasting, reserving practices, and policy drafting issues. He has also served as risk manager and general counsel for a national not-for-profit organization.

Education and Background

Mr. Buchanan received his J.D. from the University of Kentucky College of Law in 1990, graduating first in his class. Before becoming an attorney, Mr. Buchanan served seven years in law enforcement, including five years holding elected public office as the head of his agency.
